Cora Houston Terrace Dorm
Two alumni with a passion for young people and with generous hearts made it possible for Toccoa Falls College to build another student housing facility within the scope of 18 months.
Mr. Wade Houston from Augusta, Georgia, built the Louise Bell Houston Terrace Dorm in honor of his wife, Louise (Bell) Houston who graduated from Toccoa Falls High School in 1950. The Louise Dorm was dedicated January 19, 2007, during the school’s 100th anniversary year.
Now, several months later with the burden for young men and women preparing for the ministry, Mr. Houston and an anonymous alumnus from 1939 made a second dorm possible with their generous gifts. Twenty-four young women will move in their brand new, two-story dorm during the Fall 2008 semester. Each terrace dorm is built in four six-person “quads.” Each quad is equipped with a full kitchen, common study area, four two-person bedrooms, handicap accessible bathrooms, and complete wireless connectivity.
Cora Houston Terrace Dorm, named for Mr. Houston’s mother, will be dedicated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2008. A bronze plaque is placed inside Cora Dorm to memorialize the anonymous donor. It reads: This facility was in part provided by a young man who spent a few weeks at Toccoa Falls College in 1939.
The Terrace Dorm concept was the brainchild of Mr. Ken Sanders, former Vice-President of Student Affairs. Ken understood the housing challenges that Toccoa Falls faced as the student body grew. Several years ago he proposed that we take advantage of the natural landscape upon which the college stands and construct smaller dorms than the typical two-hundred person facility. This design concept was a stroke of genius for several reasons; one, it became more affordable to build and maintain; two, each facility fit the landscape perfectly; and three, it provided greater flexibility as our gender populations changed from year to year.
So, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Administration, the Alumni Association, and the student body, we thank Mr. Houston and Mr. Anonymous for their sensitivity to the housing needs of Toccoa Falls College.
