Alumni Spotlight
From time to time we will highlight alums who have made a remarkable difference through ministry and dedication to God's work.
Clifford (HS 1947, BC 1950) and Pauline (Tingen, 1950) McCrary
Clifford (HS 1947, BC 1950) and Pauline (Tingen, 1950) McCrary met while they attended Toccoa Falls Academy and College in the late 1940s, and their desire to serve the Lord together was cemented at TFC.
As students, Clifford worked in the cannery and the maintenance department while Pauline traveled with Dr. Forrest in a singing group and choir.
Melvin (1961) and Kathleen (Foster, 1960) Carter
We highlight a couple whose connections with Toccoa Falls College are deep and wide: Melvin (1961) and Kathleen (Foster, 1960) Carter, retired missionaries from Gabon, Africa. They spent over 30 years with the Christian and Missionary Alliance helping to build God’s Kingdom. During a furlough period in 1994, Melvin worked at TFC in the Advancement Department, helping to raise funds for the college.
Dr. Julian Bandy (1924)
Our spotlight this month is on Dr. Julian A. Bandy (1924), the second president of Toccoa Falls College. Dr. Bandy went home to be with the Lord on June 5, 1998. Immediately following his passing, Linda (Browne, 1961) Grant, the editor of the college magazine, created a supplemental issue honoring him entitled, Remembering ‘The Gentle Giant.’ One of Dr. Bandy’s sons, Leland, submitted an article on behalf of the family in which he paid special tribute to his dad.
Steve (1992) and Christy (Wurst, 1993) Volstad
The Volstad’s ministry has taken them to the seventh largest city in the world with a population exceeding 10,535,000. People to whom they minister are called Muscovites.
Moscow is located near the Moskva River in the Central Federal District in the European part of Russia. Historically, it was the capital of the former Soviet Union, the Russian Empire, Tsardom or Russia, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow.
Carol Nascimento (2006)
On March 11, 2010, Carol Nascimento was honored as the 2011 recipient of the Stephens County System Teacher of the Year Award. An awards dinner was held at North Georgia Technical College where she received this honor and other award candidates were recognized. This prestigious awards program is intended to focus attention on excellence in teaching throughout the county school system.
Dr. Paul Alford
Dr. Alford has worn many hats, forged many trails, and impacted many lives during his 50+ years of ministry. The Lord has led him from the streets of New York City into the heart of the Ecuadorian Jungle preaching the gospel. He has been a sailor, an evangelist, church planter, missionary, pastor, district superintendent for the Christian and Missionary Alliance, executive board member, college president, and Chancellor. It is evident that his “steps were ordered by the Lord.”
Dr. Richard and Evelyn Forrest
Each of us who has walked the hallowed grounds of the Toccoa Falls campus owes much to these two obedient, dedicated servant leaders whom God called into service for Him 102 years ago. Together, Dr. and Mrs. Forrest, founded Toccoa Falls, and forged the path for continual service. They left a legacy of sacrifice that few of us can equal, a passion for building His kingdom, and a love for educating students to take the gospel around the globe.
Miss Sett (1960)
Miss Sett has faithfully served Toccoa Falls Institute and College for over 56 years! She has impacted the lives of thousands of young women who lived in her dorms, who ate from her smorgasbord buffets, and who were blessed by nightly dorm devotions. Miss Sett has trained hundreds of young men and women in proper etiquette and poise, including how to properly sit, walk, set a table, and serve a fine meal. Her "girls" will never forget her; she has left a lasting imprint upon their (our) hearts that continue to endear us to her.
Elise Webber (2009)
This past year Elise was a valued member of TESTIFY, a music and drama ministry team who ministered to churches and youth camps during Winterim break in January and eight weeks during the summer. This was a spiritually growing period for each team member, even for those who toured on two previous occasions. But for Elise, she talked about how she was “stretched” in many ways.
Jared Ritter (2001)
Jared graduated from Toccoa Falls College magna cum laude with a B.S. in Psychology. His ambition was to attend medical college to study mental health with the goal of making as great an impact as possible, and this field of study is close to his heart.
So, on May 16, 2009, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
